The Journal of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (JPOSNA®) has published a Primer on Cast and Splint Application. This online educational resource is ideal for orthopaedic learners. It includes chapters written by experienced pediatric orthopaedic surgeons, and is filled with photos, videos, and pearls provided by well-known mentors in the field. Readers can assess their knowledge of what they learned with questions and answers provided by the authors at the end of each chapter. The primer covers the application of all common upper and lower extremity splints and casts, as well as chapters on cast materials, safe cast removal, and techniques for managing patient and parental anxiety.

Sarah was a champion in the pediatric orthopaedic advanced practice field. She advocated for professional development, emphasizing the importance of building your basic pediatric orthopaedic knowledge while utilizing primary care fundamentals as a foundation for your daily practice.

In honor of Sarah, POPS will award two scholarships in the amount of $900.00 to apply towards the cost of the IPOS meeting in December 2023. This scholarship has been graciously funded by Gillette Children's Hospital Division of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Interested applicants should complete the attached application form. Deadline for the receipt of applications is six weeks after the scholarship application has been posted. Recipients will be notified by email on the status of their application at that time. The recipients will be formally recognized at the IPOS conference.

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

1. Member has not received a POPS scholarship in the past 3 years.

2. Member is not a current member of POPS Executive Board.

3. Complete an application form for the Sarah Gutknecht Continuing Education Scholarship.

4. In the year following the scholarship award, scholarship recipient(s) are required to become involved in POPS through committee participation, poster or speaker presentation at the following year’s annual conference.

Scottish Rite for Children will be hosting its second Pediatric Musculoskeletal Ultrasound: Fundamentals Course on Saturday, May 20, 2023 in Frisco, Texas.

This course will have with pediatric-focused lectures and hands-on scanning of kids led by ultrasound experts from pediatric radiology, rheumatology, and sports medicine. We’re going to make more life-like injection models and also have a lunch presentation about the business/hospital admin side of ultrasound. Click below to see the agenda, learn more, and register. Registration is now open for the Pediatric Musculoskeletal Ultrasound: Fundamentals Course [scottishriteforchildren.org] hosted by Scottish Rite for Children on Saturday, November 19.

This pediatric-focused instructional course includes small group scanning sessions throughout the day. Devices and pediatric volunteers will be available for groups of four learners with course faculty assigned to each station. Space is limited (28!) so don’t wait to register and share this with interested individuals.

There is a $100 discount for all who register prior to October 1.

This conference is intended for pediatric medical professionals interested in an introduction to musculoskeletal ultrasound.

Summary

Job Purpose

The Department of Pediatrics, Orthopedic Surgery, at Children’s Hospital of San Antonio (CHoSA), in San Antonio, Texas, is currently recruiting for a Physician Assistant-Instructor

Working in a high volume and patient-oriented clinic, this position will be responsible for the management of patients with pediatric acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions under the direct supervision of several pediatric orthopedic surgeons.

Job Duties

Essential job functions and duties include, but are not limited to:

Evaluation of new and follow-up patients, including history and physical exams, diagnosis, and recommendations for treatment.
Casting and Splinting.
Interpretation of X-rays and MRI films within the scope of practice.
Post-operative care including wound care, dressing changes, brace prescription and evaluation, reviewing operative photographs and procedures.
Call coverage.
Obtain detailed history and perform physical examinations.
Perform, order, and interpret diagnostic procedures in accordance with relevant health concerns of the patient.
Prescribes appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments.
Maintain records and write orders and progress notes in patient charts as to status, treatments, and procedures.
Monitors and ensures accuracy of recording on patient medical records.
Provide follow-up health maintenance care to patients in accordance with protocols established with the supervising physician.
Communicate with physicians, patients, and the family members of patients concerning patient care.
Collaborates with providers, and practice staff in identifying appropriate patients for care management.
Perform other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education Required: Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies. NOTE: Bachelor's degree in Physician Assistant Studies accepted based on terminal degree requirements at time of graduation.
Experience Required: None required.
Certification/Licenses/Registration: Current license as a Physician Assistant by the State of Texas Physician Assistant Board. Specialty certification as required by department. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
